This painting was sent to us by John Paterson. John is a retired school teacher, who taught at Porlock first school for many years before retiring and turning to his passion of art to fill his time painting with oils and also in water-colour.
A chance visit to Allerford Forge to discuss a metalwork project with the blacksmiths of West Country Blacksmiths gave John a perfect subject for a series of painting which he is working on called ‘You need hands’.
This started when he created a painting of four men he encountered on a trip to Glasgow three or four years ago. He models his paintings on one of his favorite paintings – Supper at Emmaeus by Carravagio, bringing it up to date in a modern setting and naming it Supper at Emma’s. Hands play a very prominent part in that painting, and this led him to look for subjects where people are using their hands.
The subject in the painting is Kyle Roberts, who with his brother run a blacksmithing business from Allerford Forge. The painting shows Kyle working a piece of hot steel in-front of the traditional coal forge in the center of the historic National Trust owned forge.
